By our creation we are the work of God, and in Bap<br />

tism we become the children of God, brethren and co<br />

heirs of Jesus Christ. In order that we may enter into<br />

possession of our eternal inheritance, we must obtain<br />

remission of our debts, that is of our sins, and by our<br />

good works make reparation for them. Amongst those<br />

good works which are most acceptable to God is that<br />

of almsgiving. If we would lay up for ourselves trea<br />

sures in heaven and secure powerful protectors before<br />

the throne of God, we can do nothing better than to<br />

employ our earthly riches in relieving the poor.<br />

For the reasons already given in Chapter vn, we shall<br />

make NO MENTION further OF THE OFFICE, because it now<br />

becomes impossible to establish any connection, however<br />

remote, between the antiphon of the Magnificat at the<br />

first Vespers or the Lessons of the night Office and the<br />

Mass of these corning Sundays. For the present there<br />

fore, we shall confine our study to the Mass for each<br />

Sunday, reserving for the end some supplementary chap-
