the sacrifices of the Jewish religion could no longer be<br />

continued. The Church of Jesus Christ alone with the<br />

Mass, the representation and continuation of the Sa<br />

crifice of Calvary, became a CENTRE OF SPIRITUAL LIFE<br />

and activity for the conversion and sanctification of men<br />

until the end of time. There is no longer any parallel<br />

to be drawn between the Synagogue and the Catholic<br />

Church. Henceforth, everything in our liturgy will<br />

reflect the STABILITY OF THE CHURCH, her union with<br />

God, the carrying out of the supernatural means of<br />

sanctification which she makes use of in the most<br />

varied forms.<br />

In the Epistle of the Mass for this Sunday, Saint Paul,<br />

explaining to the Corinthians the diversity of the graces<br />

bestowed on the first members of the Christian assem<br />

blies, teaches them that these various gifts emanate<br />

from the same divine Spirit who has given birth to<br />

the Church , and who preserves her life, completes<br />

her organization, and directs her activity.<br />

This action<br />

of the Holy Ghost produces in the Church two effects :<br />

unity of direction and diversity or multiplicity of ope<br />

rations. The works may be different, but all are produced<br />

by one and the same divine Spirit who directs all<br />

and distributes to each one the form of activity which<br />

He wills to give. These varied forms of activity, Saint<br />

Paul divides into three categories : the graces, such as<br />

the gifts of wisdom, of knowledge and of faith ; the<br />

functions, such as preaching, and the administration of<br />

the Sacraments ; actions, such as the working of miracles,<br />

and the discernment of Spirits. But because these effects<br />

are different, they are none the less, the work of the<br />

selfsame Spirit.<br />

FROM this we may deduce a proof of the UNITY<br />

and HOLINESS OF THE CHURCH. She is one because all
