example, the piano has sf while the cello, simultaneously, has rf(Ex. 3.41.) Cherubini, on the other hand, clearly<br />

continued to use rinf to signify a powerful crescendo, somewhat in the manner of Jomelli. It often occurs in his music<br />

in the final bars of a passage that has earlier been marked ‘cresc’, evidently to ensure that the increase of volume<br />

continues (and intensifies) right up to the point of arrival at fortissimo. Typical examples of this may be found in the<br />

‘Dies irae’ of his C minor Requiem and in his overture to Anacreon.<br />
