XLIV., §§ 127-129. Argument.—/C is about Chrysogmus, not<br />
about Sulla, that I am making these statemenls. Since the proscriptions<br />
and sales were to end on June Ist, and the murder took place<br />
some months after ihat date, either the property was never entered in<br />
the public accounts, or the public accounts were tampered with ; for<br />
the sale could not have been a legal one.<br />
Ch. XLIV.— 1. in quem : " about whom." in eum : " about him.<br />
Cicero, though throughout this part of his speech there is an undercurrent<br />
of feeling against the arbitrary measures of SuUa, takes<br />
care to avoid a direct attack upon the all-powerful dictator.<br />
4. ut : "namely, that." The clauses introduced by ut are all<br />
substantive clauses explanatory of haec omnia. ementiretur ; used<br />
absolutely, "he told lies."<br />
7. passus non sit : ementiretur, fingeret, diceret are in the imperfect<br />
because they express the reiterated assertions of Chrysogonus<br />
; the perfeet is here used because it denotes the single act<br />
which was the culmination and result of the repeated deelarations.<br />
10. quam ad diem: "an appointed day up to which"; dies is<br />
generally feminine in the singular when it means " a set dny " or<br />
" appointed t.ime " In the plunil it is always niasculine.<br />

/menses : we might have expected the ablative of measure or<br />
idegree of difference, aliquot mensihus postea ; the aecusative seems<br />

13. profecto: "inany case." haecbona: i.e. themoney accruing<br />
from the sale of the property. nulla : adverbial, "not at all,"<br />
equivalent to an emphatic non. redierunt : literally '<br />
' have come<br />
in" as revenue or income ; i.e. " have been registered" in the State<br />
accounts.<br />
15. corruptae . . . sunt : through the entry being made under a<br />
false date (i.e. one before June Ist).<br />
17. ante tempus : sinee the caput or personality (under the<br />
charge of parricidium, the life) of Sex. Rosoius was still in danger.<br />
1 19. reduviam curem : "attend to a hang-nail" on the finger ;<br />
I rediLviam curare was a pi-overbial expression for " to be busy about<br />

22. liberatus sit " : sub-dependent " subjunctive, in dependence<br />
on an accusative and infinitive phrase.<br />
23. pro me ipso : = meo nomine, " on my own account."<br />
27. sensu ac dolore : hendiadys, "feelings of indignation."<br />
28. qua condicione : == qua fortima ; he will be content with a<br />
bare acquittal on the charge of parricide.<br />
29. extrema oratione : = extrema parte orationis. Adjectives<br />
like su7nmus, medius, and extremus, instead of qualifying as a whole<br />
the substantives of which they are the attributes,<br />
