the plural shows that the vehicles were changed at each postinghouse.<br />
18. quadriduo : ablative of time within whieli, " within four<br />
days." quo : = a die quo, " from the day on which," (loeative) abla-<br />
tive of time.<br />
19. Volaterras : accusative of the goal of motion witliout a<br />
preposition, as the goal is expressed by the nanie of a town ; but<br />
even in this case a preposition may be used with a slightly different<br />
sense : cp. ad Volaten-as in 36, 32, n. English idiom requires " in<br />
the camp at Yolaterrae."<br />
21. fuudos : = praedia ; afwidus was properly ager cum aedijicio.<br />
22. Tiberim . . . tangunt : they were probably situated near<br />
Horta (Orte), where the Nar flows into the Tiber.<br />
24. splendidus " : magnificent," a word often applied to a<br />
Roman egues. gratiosus : "popular."<br />
25. sit occisus : perfect subjunctive depending on the primary<br />
tense demonstrant ; cum ( = since) would even in the direct speech<br />
take the subjunctive.<br />
26. de medio toUi posse " : could be got out of the way."<br />
27. teneam : final subjunctive expressing the purpose, not of the<br />
action of the principal verb (coitur), but of the mention of that<br />
aetion (" I mention at once that . . . in order that I may not . . .").<br />
Teneam is here used without vos, with an apparently absolute force.<br />
28. societas " : a conspiracy," between the two Titi Roscii and<br />
Chr3'sogonus.<br />
VIII., §§ 21-23. Argument.— The name qf Sextus Boscius ivas put<br />
upon the proscription list and his goods sold to Chrysogonus,— all<br />
without the knowledge of Sidla ; and my client was tumed out of<br />
kouse and home hy Titus Eoscius.<br />
Ch. VIII.— 1. proseriptionis : see Introd., §2. The proscription<br />
lists closed on June Ist, 81 B.c. fieret . . . redirent . . . arbitrarentur<br />
: subjunctives in concessive clauses (cM»i = " although").<br />
The verbs are in the imperfect, since they are dependent on the<br />
historic pre.sent refertur.<br />
3. in tabulas : sc. proscriptionis, " on the proscription list";<br />
the result of his being proscribed was that all his property was<br />
confiscated to the State.<br />
4. veneunt : the property was sold by public auction [suh hasta)<br />
bj' the quaestors in the Forum.<br />
5. vel : " perhaps," modifying no6i7»«s?'?/?a ; cp. 2, 15, n.<br />
6. propria : secondary<br />
