west. Earlier, it was a part of Kohima district and was made a separate district in year 1973. Agriculture is<br />
the main occupation of the people of Phek.<br />
6.5.1 Economy<br />
Data on district wise contribution to Nagaland‟s GSDP is not available. However, district wise<br />
contribution to the agriculture GSDP of the State indicates that as of 2005-06, Phek had agriculture GSDP<br />
of Rs182 lakh.<br />
In terms of industrial activity, of the 704 SSIs registered in Nagaland in 2007, Phek‟sproportion of SSIs<br />
was at 2.4 per cent. However, there is a significant presence of the informal sector.<br />
6.5.2Demography<br />
Phek‟s share in Nagaland‟s land area is 12 per cent. However, its share in State‟s population is 8 per cent.<br />
The population density in the district is second lowest in the State, at 81. At 85 per cent of population, it<br />
is mostly rural.<br />
Most of the population is tribal, at 96 per cent of the total population. Total population in the district is at<br />
163,294. Literacy rate is 79 per cent. Population is young, with 41.2 per cent of the population in the age-<br />
group of 0-14 year and 54.5 per cent of the population in the age-group of 15-59 years.<br />
6.5.3Infrastructure<br />
As of 2008-09, Phek district had a road length of 975 km under PWD. There is no railway or airport<br />
connectivity. Drinking water facilities are available in all 104 inhabited villages in the district. Electricity<br />
supply is, however, available in 102 villages.<br />
