7.1Bamboo<br />
About 5 per cent of India‟s bamboo grows in Nagaland. Based on which, bamboo based industries have<br />
started to come up.<br />
Potential<br />
Bamboo is found extensively all over Nagaland. It occurs predominantly in parts of Dimapur,<br />
Peren, Mon and Mokokchung districts.<br />
Nagaland is estimated to have 448,000 hectares of land under bamboo, which is about five per<br />
cent of the growing stock of bamboo in the country.<br />
About 22 species of bamboo have been identified in the State. Predominant ones are Kakoo<br />
(Dendrocalamushamitonii), Daloo (Teinostachyumdulloa) and Jati (Bambusatulda).<br />
Government thrust<br />
To promote bamboo development in the State, the Government of Nagaland notified the Bamboo<br />
Policy for the State in March 2005.<br />
One of the objectives of the policy is to promote bamboo based industries. Nagaland Bamboo<br />
Current status<br />
<strong>Development</strong> Agency has been set up to achieve the objectives of this policy.<br />
Bamboo industries are yet to take off in a big way in the State. However, some of the products are<br />
manufactured on a small scale in the State. These include bamboo mats, incense sticks, blinds,<br />
bamboo charcoal, bamboo shoots, bamboo roads, etc.<br />
Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre has also been established, as a centre of excellence for<br />
facilitating technology and information for resource and enterprise developments, creating<br />
awareness on the potentials of bamboo, building the capacity of bamboo farmers and<br />
entrepreneurs, etc.<br />
A few bamboo charcoal production units have also come up in the State.<br />
