Peace is my target. I declare my prejudice. Peace, I learned,<br />

is not that obvious a prejudice and by no means a universal<br />

target. “What about Justice!? restitution!? Protection!? Privilege!?<br />

equality!?<br />

for me, peace is paramount and if you take peace seriously<br />

the rest comes naturally. Nail the fierce to the ratification of<br />

the little men with sofas to pay off and children to educate and<br />

mealies to grow, and you get peace whether you like it or not.<br />

Nobody votes himself into war with his neighbour. If conflicts<br />

are great, add more nails.<br />

But peace created awful heat. I tried speaking peace, wherever<br />

I could. I went to proselytise a Soweto discussion group called<br />

community affairs forum – caf, a little unfortunate since “kaf”<br />

is afrikaans for “nonsense” and one was continually reminded.<br />

Madikolo Motumi, the director of the National Organisation of<br />

Women, took the cake against strong competition. I was “just<br />

the same as the aWB’s eugene Terre’Blanche”, as I wanted to
