ST. LUKE AND CHRISTIAN JOY<br />

<strong>The</strong> high note <strong>of</strong> Christian Joy was, so far as we<br />

know, first struck by St. Paul. He experienced, and<br />

could proclaim as an experience, both " <strong>the</strong> joy in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lord " and " <strong>the</strong> joy in <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit." How<br />

much he regarded joy as <strong>the</strong> necessary and constant<br />

condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian is shown in many passages<br />

<strong>of</strong> his writings, but above all in 2 Cor. i. 24 : avpepyol<br />
