Fazit
Uns hat der UFD 510 von Kathrein Spaß
gemacht. Er bietet alle Voraussetzungen für
einen zukunftsweisenden digitalen Familien-
Receiver. Die Verarbeitungsqualität kann
man getrost als sehr gut bewerten. Die
Dokumentation ist ausgezeichnet und so
hat auch der Nicht-Fachmann keinerlei
Probleme, diesen Receiver in Betrieb zu
nehmen. Einzig ein digitaler Audioausgang
wäre wünschenswert gewesen.

You just have to check if DiSEqC is switched
on. The dish alignment menu makes it
much easier to perfectly align your dish
under all circumstances. It not only shows
the signal strength but the quality as well. In
fact with digital reception it is a question of
to be or not to be. Signals beneath 5dB are
out of the question for digital reception. On
the other side, 12.99dB is the absolute top.
An automatic search will give you the possibility
to skip all encrypted channels. Astra
channels are updated using ASIUS (Astra
Service Information Update System). This
ensures that all channels are programmed.
But a more traditional transponder search
is also possible, of course. The UFD 510
will just scan all transponders on a satellite.
Although it may take a while, it literally
finds any digital channel available. Packages
with symbol rates of 22000 and 27500 are
searched. Additionally, a third symbol rate
can be entered. Logically, you would try
5632 here, which is used for SCPC signals
quite frequently. This mode also gives you
the possibility to skip encrypted pay-TV
channels.
EPG with a lot more
The UFD 510 offers superb graphics, not
only for the menus but for the EPG as well.
Unfortunately, not all programme providers
offer proper EPG information. As soon as
you have used the EPG for the first time
you’ll wonder how you ever could have
done without it. The only thing left to be
desired is that all programme providers
supply the information, which is still not
the case, and one wonders why—are some
media moguls possibly not only offering digital
TV but printed TV guides as well, which
could become obsolete in the digital age?
The EPG also works in radio mode. It
is easy to programme particular shows, so
you can have your own personal wakeup
music or be sure not to miss that big
match. Another application of this function
could be to determine every evening
upfront which programmes are to be
watched. Hyperactive zappers can now put
the remote aside.
A timer function is also built-in, offering
eight events over a one-year period. Of
course, you can easily change the order of
radio and TV channels and also delete the
ones you don’t want. A PIN-code can block
access for children to certain channels.

Most receivers are not able to tell the difference
between no signal and encrypted
signals. The Kathrein UFD 510 however,
does this with the greatest ease. Encrypted
signals are indicated with “S”. Switching
channels is done fast. However, only switching
to ARD-online will take some time to
display the page. The reason is not that the
UFD 510 were slow, but much more the
large amount of data involved.
Conclusion
We really enjoyed the UFD 510. It features
everything you could wish for, making
it an investment for the future. Made
of high quality components, it comes with
decent manuals, which makes it easy to
install even for laymen. We can only make
a remark about the absence of a digital
audio output.
