Dear Dr.Dish: Would you please give advise on the choice of satellite dishes. We are currently receiving a signal from Pas 7 in Lusaka, Zambia on a 90cm dish. Thank You David Edwards, Lusaka, Zambia Dr.Dish: In your rain area (zone G / Water Vapour Density 15 g/meters-cub). a signal-att. of 14.6 dB could be espected in a worse case. To be on the safe side, I would use a 120cm-dish. But you will always get the chance to loose the signal for a short while. To do the job more properly I will need the C/N-value during good weather. If you need this kind of information more often, I ould advice you to obtain professional-pc-software. A adress can be provided, if needed. Also in the next issue of TSI I published charts to calculate signal-avaibility against dish sizes for digital/analogoue signals in the c- and ku-band. Dear Dr.Dish: We have got some problems around here with electricity. Every time on stormy weather while flashing, power goes out. It’s a shock for any electronic device. Many receivers are well protected and just needed to be unplugged a few seconds. So, the real problem is with Strong 1500 LT with built in positioner. It just lose dish limits (you know what does it mean) or disposition every satellite, so on memorised positions you receive nothing. To fix it you need to set up limits and renter positions of satellites again. All other memory settings are still in there. It works fine to another storm and then all over again. I tried to simulate this by forced switching power on and off many times but nothing happened. It must be something about voltage or frequency I think? Do you have any experiences with this problem or any solution to fix it? It happens only with Strong 1500 LT otherwise a very good receiver. I have just read about this famous monoblock LNB and your test. Did you test it on the larger dishes, because we need at least 1m for good and 1,25 for very good reception of some ASTRA transponders in this area? Do you know how much it will cost and is it worthy because you need to replace it with new one if the one of a separate LNB-s or switch inside may not function properly or may not function at all? Other wise you will replace only broken part, am I right? Now about digital. Do you know when there will be available “Automatic receiver set-up” for other software versions so that we can update some other digital boxes? Regards Roberto, Dubrovnik, Croatia Dr.Dish: I got the same experience down in Greece with a old Echostar and could solve it by using a powernet-filter/regulator which are used to protect computers and just plugged between the powerlead of the device in question and the 220V connector on the wall. During a vacation in your country my landlord had a similar problem (just loosing the memory during thunderstorms) and after I grounded his antenna properly the problem vanished. If this simple solution will be of any help in your case, I am not convinced. So I will leave this question open here and hopefully someone of our readers get up with some good idea. The Monoblock-LNBF is a new standard and costs around 10 US-$ more then a common LNBF. The test was been done on a 85cm and on a 140cm offset-dish and switching is done by DiSEqC (1.0 and higher). On both dishes everthing worked fine and the installation was been a 3 minutes-job. For updating (channel-editing) of your digital receiver have a look at www. satcodx.com Loader-software is available, but you did not state the brand and model of your receiver. Many receivers are able to download via satcodx. For Nokia-receivers you will find a lot of additional downloading tools (like Transbox-Pro and others) Dear Dr.Dish: During the year or so I am reading all your DIY-stories.
