COSMETOLOGY, HAIRDRESSING, AND MANICURING ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Prior to enrollment, all applicants must visit the school for a personal tour of the facilities and have a personal interview with the Director of Admissions. New classes commence every other Wednesday and applicants should apply as far in advance of the starting date as possible. To be considered for enrollment an applicant must: 1. Be at least 17 years of age, if applicant is under 18 years of age, then written approval of parents is necessary; 2. Provide a copy of a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate; 3. Provide a copy of a birth certificate, driver’s license, or State ID; 4. Have a personal interview that indicates the applicant meets minimum requirements as to age, physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and also establishes not only a definite interest in a professional career in Cosmetology, but the ability to perform all duties for individual courses; and 5. Be of good moral character, free from any contagious disease, and not dependant on any illicit drugs or alcohol. Merrell University does not participate in the Ability to Benefit Program. COURSE DESCRIPTION The University offers a complete course in cosmetology, hairdressing and manicuring. The content of the course is taught over a period of 12 months (approximately 50 weeks), 30 hours per week. The course is a full-time program for a minimum of 1,500 clock hours. Upon completion of the course, the student will have acquired the technical abilities and academic theories that enables them to meet the requirements of the Missouri State Board of Cosmetology for licensure, get an entry level job, perform cosmetology services offered in a full service salon, and be able to earn a living. Other opportunities: salon owner, sales, marketing, platform work, instructor, and manicurist and stylist specialties. INSTRUCTION At Merrell University, the student learns by seeing, demonstrations and audio-visual aids, hearing, with lectures on a wide range of subjects including personal and professional development, and by doing, with actual hands-on practical techniques. By adding individual creativity, the student will master the art of hair designing. Classes are held Wednesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a 30 minute lunch period. 18
TUITION AND FEES Tuition and fees for the complete full-time cosmetology course is $8,000.00. A registration fee of $150 will be paid when the Enrollment Agreement is signed with the balance of tuition being paid in one of the following manners: 1. Cash payment in full at the commencement of classes 2. Tuition paid through the University’s financial program requires a registration fee of $150 due on the first day of instruction. The balance of $8,000.00 is to be paid on the following schedule: $667 to be paid on the first Wednesday of each month for the next twelve months. 3. Tuition paid through Title IV (Federal grants and Student Loan Programs) and/or Title V (VR-vocational Rehabilitation, JPTA-Job Training Partnership Act, VA-Veterans Administration) will be credited to the student’s unpaid tuition account upon the receipt of the funding agency check. Any expense not covered by the above mentioned programs will be the responsibility of the student and dealt with on a case-by basis. The tuition fee will cover 1,500 clock hours of instruction, which is to be completed by the student within 11 _ calendar months from the date classes begin. The tuition fee includes the cost of $500.00 for student kits, textbooks, and mannequin and artificial hand necessary for the state board examination. The student kits are the property of the student, but must remain at the University until the student has graduated. Additional costs are limited to writing instruments and note pads. Sculptured nail supplies are not included in the cost of books and supplies. They are made available to the student at their option upon payment of a fee when sculptured nail class is offered. Registration fee ($150) is refundable if requested by the student in writing at least three days prior to the commencement of classes. CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY Any applicant not accepted by Merrell University will be entitled to a refund of all monies paid. If a student (or in the case of a student under legal age, his/her parent or guardian) cancels his/her enrollment and demands his/her money back, in writing, within three business days of the signing of the Enrollment agreement, all monies collected by the school will be refunded. The postmark of written notification will determine the cancellation date, or the date written notification is delivered to the University Administrator/Owner. 19
