INSTRUCTOR TRAINING<br />

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS<br />

Prior to enrollment, all applicants must visit the school for a personal tour of the facilities and<br />

have a personal interview with the Director of Admissions. New classes commence every other<br />

Wednesday and applicants should apply as far in advance of the starting date as possible.<br />

To be considered for enrollment an applicant must:<br />

1. Be at least 17 years of age, if applicant is under 18 years of age, then written approval of<br />

parents is necessary;<br />

2. Provide a copy of a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED)<br />

certificate;<br />

3. Provide a copy of a birth certificate, driver’s license, or State ID;<br />

4. Have a personal interview that indicates the applicant meets minimum requirements as to<br />

age, physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and also establishes not only a definite<br />

interest in a professional career in Cosmetology, but the ability to perform all duties for<br />

individual course; and<br />

5. Be of good moral character, free from any contagious disease, and not dependant on any<br />

illicit drugs or alcohol.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

<strong>Merrell</strong> <strong>University</strong> does not participate in the Ability to Benefit Program.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> offers a complete course in instructor training. The content of the course is<br />

taught over a period of five months (approximately 20 weeks), 30 hours per week. The course is<br />

a full-time program for a minimum of 600 clock hours. Upon completion of the course, the<br />

student will have acquired the professional skills necessary for effective teaching including,<br />

classroom management, lesson preparation, understanding the psychology of learning, student<br />

evaluation, and the ability to manage a cosmetology school.<br />

INSTRUCTION<br />

During the student instructional period, the student will commence by observing the instructor,<br />

preparing lesson plans and implement their knowledge as a student teacher. In addition to<br />

classroom instruction, the student will have classes in theories of instruction and supervision of a<br />

clinic laboratory. Daily class instruction commences 8:30 AM and terminates at 4:30PM with<br />

30 minutes for lunch. Classes are held Wednesday through Saturday.<br />
