Housing: The office of the Director of Admissions provides assistance to students who are in search of housing while in school. The University does not have apartments or dormitory facilities for students to rent. During the admissions process, the student should indicate any housing need. Parking: Adequate parking is available for both clinic patrons and students. The student parking area adjoins the building and is convenient. Counseling: Each student receives a progress report at the first of each month, which is reviewed with the student by an instructor. During the review, the instructor counsels the student providing assistance for their educational well-being. In addition to educational counseling, the Office of Admissions maintains a readiness to assist student concerns regarding financial grants and loans. Placement: The University does not guarantee employment for a student upon graduation. However, placement is high priority for both the school and the student. A student bulletin board is maintained for employer requests. As part of the cosmetology training, the student is taught how to write a resume, proper personal appearance, and conduct during a job interview. Instructors and other staff members are in constant contact with professionals in the cosmetology field and make information available regarding job openings. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Merrell University is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences, Alexandria, VA, and approved by the United States Department of Education for many state and federal financial assistance programs. Application for Federal Student Aid may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office. Merrell University Scholarship: Merrell University offers a yearly Scholarship to each area high school. The Scholarship amounts are $500 for Esthetics and a $1,000 for Cosmetology, and each is nonrenewable. One Scholarship is awarded per high school. In order to be eligible, the candidate must be at least 17 years of age at the time of enrollment, be of good moral character and demonstrated such in high school. Candidates should be in the upper 50 % of their graduating class and indicate an interest in Cosmetology and/or Esthetics. The high school and Merrell University choose the recipients jointly. Please check your high school counselor’s office for an application. Pell Grant: In addition to demonstrating a financial need the student must: 1. Be enrolled as a regular student; 2. Have a high school diploma or recognized equivalent; 3. Be either a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen; 4. Be making satisfactory progress in his/her course of study; and 5. File a statement of educational purpose and selective service registration status with the school. Students are not eligible for a pell grant if he or she is enrolled in an elementary or secondary school, is in default on a student loan, or owes a refund on a student grant from the U.S. Department of Education Loan Program. Student Loan Program: For eligibility for the Missouri Guaranteed Student Loan Program a student applicant must: 1. Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment and maintaining satisfactory progress; 2. Be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible non-citizen; 3. Be a resident of Missouri; 4. Not in default on any Missouri Guaranteed Student Loan, (any defaulted GSL or PLUS loans must be paid in full, prior to a guarantee being made); 5. Be in compliance with the Selective Service Registration requirements; and 6. Meet the requirements of a family adjusted gross income or provide income information to the school to determine financial need. 9
