6. ECOLOGY & NATURE CONSERVATION 6.1 Introduction Dawn Developments Ltd/467374673/Queen’s Quay Masterplan EIA/KD 04/01/2012 Major Mixed Use Development, Queen's Quay, Clydebank EIA Scoping Report The Development has the potential to impact upon the terrestrial and marine habitats and species of the site and the Inner Clyde Estuary. This chapter presents the proposed methods that will be used to assess the potential ecological impacts of the Development. 6.2 Consultation Early consultation has been undertaken with West Dunbartonshire Council and SNH regarding the requirement for a Habitat Regulations Assessment (HRA) to assess the impacts of the Development on the conservation objectives of the Inner Clyde SPA and its qualifying interest – Redshank (Tringa totanus). The Council, in consultation with SNH, has determined that an HRA will be required. A stand alone report to inform the HRA will require to be submitted to the Council (the Competent Authority) with the planning application. Further consultations regarding the scope of the EIA and the HRA were undertaken with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) on the 14 th October. SNH highlighted that they would expect the potential for impacts on the following species to be assessed within the EIA for the Development: • Inner Clyde SPA redshank; • Inner Clyde SSSI birds; • Otters; 6.3 Baseline • River Clyde fish (salmon). SNH stated that due to the distance of the south bank redshank roosts from the development, it may be possible to avoid/ mitigate potential for adverse impacts on redshank at the source. Using this approach, a revised wintering bird survey would not be necessary as existing data (e.g. a 2005/6 redshank survey for an adjacent site, WeBS count) and a few basic assumptions could be relied upon to undertake the assessment. Additional consultation will be held with bodies such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and the Clyde Ringing Group to determine if additional records (primarily of Redshank adjacent to the development site) are available. A number of designated sites for nature conservation are located within and adjacent to the Development site. These have been described in Chapter 5. All of the former shipyard buildings have now been demolished and cleared from the site. During the demolition works the ground was stripped of hardstanding and vegetation Page 26 Final for Issue
