accepted the position of general manager.<br />

a target of 1,250 cars was envisaged for the current month. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>British</strong> officer pointed out the problems with the procurement<br />

of sheet metal, <strong>and</strong> warned the factory management of the<br />

possibility of a production closure due to cessation of material<br />

supplies. General manager Münch countered this, saying that<br />

they must declare willingness to fulfil this delivery, particularly<br />

since Wenk had promised the necessary material. Most tempting<br />

of all for the management was the prospect of being able to<br />

deliver 50 cars from the first production surplus to the suppliers<br />

of the Volkswagenwerk. <strong>The</strong> VAW had promised to get the<br />

approval for this <strong>and</strong> ensure that a few vehicles from an order<br />

for 600 cars placed by the mining industry could be supplied. 76<br />

Some considerable way short of this target, in April 1947 1,055<br />

Volkswagens left the factory’s assembly halls, five of which were<br />

delivered ahead of time to the supply headquarters of the<br />

German mining industry. However, the production increase was<br />
