should be replaced, <strong>and</strong> the company name changed from<br />

Volkswagenwerk GmbH to Wolfsburger Motoren Werke. <strong>The</strong><br />

task assigned to Feuereissen of converting the colourful<br />

"Strength through joy" catalogue for export purposes was a first<br />

indication that this matter was to be approached in a pragmatic<br />

fashion. 188<br />

During the Hanover Fair, the first official export of the<br />

Volkswagen to the Netherl<strong>and</strong>s occurred at the beginning of<br />

August 1947. For months "Pon’s Automobielh<strong>and</strong>el" of<br />

Amersfoort, now the licensed importer, had been working<br />

towards this moment with perseverance, <strong>and</strong> occasionally in<br />

somewhat unconventional ways. Arthur Railton remembers<br />

that on one of his visits to the Volkswagenwerk, Ben Pon<br />

had stopped off at the Minden headquarters in order to talk<br />

to Colonel Radclyffe about the intended importation of<br />

Volkswagens. When the latter learned that Pon had previously<br />

been active in the automotive business, he offered him<br />

Volkswagens in exchange for sheet steel. <strong>The</strong> Dutch importer for<br />

his part offered enormous amounts of herrings for the factory<br />

canteens. Because they contained too much fat, <strong>and</strong> in accordance<br />

with the nutritional directives could not be given to the<br />

workforce, Radclyffe had to decline.<br />

<strong>The</strong> h<strong>and</strong>over of five Volkswagens to Pon – the sixth was not<br />

accepted by the inspection department – aroused great attention<br />

in the press, which extolled this "historic moment" as the<br />

rebirth of German export. 189 That same month at the Paris motor<br />

show, the Volkswagen passed its first international comparison<br />

test, which emphasised its favourable price/performance ratio<br />
