Lewis was <strong>the</strong> first merchant <strong>in</strong> Jefferson, about 1800, but he had a clerk <strong>who</strong>se name was Merchison, and on one occasion, when Lewis was absent, purchas<strong>in</strong>g goods, this clerk sold all <strong>the</strong> goods he could convert <strong>in</strong>to money at a small price, collected all <strong>the</strong> debts he could at a large discount, and disappeared. He returned to Iredell with his wife, and was killed <strong>the</strong>re by a tree, which fell on him at a "chopp<strong>in</strong>g frolic." Lewis was <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> John <strong>Bryan</strong>, <strong>who</strong> was at home on a furlough when <strong>the</strong> notorious Col. David Fann<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolutionary period, killed him <strong>in</strong> cold blood." 103.
