The first black man to vote <strong>in</strong> America, Thomas Mundy Peterson, was a member <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

Peter's and is buried <strong>in</strong> its graveyard. He voted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Perth Amboy mayoral election <strong>of</strong><br />

March 31, 1870, one day after adoption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 15th Amendment to <strong>the</strong> United States<br />

Constitution.<br />

''We are probably one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best-<strong>in</strong>tegrated parishes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> diocese,'' said Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Croes.<br />

''There is a tremendous potential <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> urban challenge - <strong>the</strong> challenge <strong>of</strong> racial<br />

harmony, hous<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> poor, environmental detoxification, etcetera. And we're ready<br />

for it.<br />

''Our parish motto is: 'Noth<strong>in</strong>g is hopeless.' ''<br />

Perth Amboy Township was formed on October 31, 1693, and was enlarged dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

1720s to encompass Perth Amboy city. Perth Amboy served as <strong>the</strong> colonial capital<br />

from 1686 until 1776. Perth Amboy's city hall, first built as a courthouse <strong>in</strong> 1685,<br />

survived major fires <strong>in</strong> 1731 and 1764 and is <strong>the</strong> oldest city hall <strong>in</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uous use <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

United States. <strong>From</strong> <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> Perth Amboy Township <strong>in</strong> 1693 <strong>the</strong>re was no<br />

county designation until Burl<strong>in</strong>gton County formed <strong>in</strong> 1710.<br />

• Marriage: 22 Aug 1714, St. Peter's Parish Church, Perth Amboy, Burl<strong>in</strong>gton County,<br />

New Jersey. Marriage by visit<strong>in</strong>g Mister Edward Vaughn, Rector <strong>of</strong> St. John's Church<br />

<strong>in</strong> Elizabeth City New Jersey.<br />

Noted events <strong>in</strong> her life were:<br />

• Information: 1691, Brugge, , Brabant, Belgium. Martha was <strong>the</strong> first child born to<br />

Edward and Susanna, she was born no later than September 1691. She was <strong>of</strong> legal age<br />

when she married Morgan <strong>Bryan</strong>, and for her to marry him without consent <strong>of</strong> guardian<br />

or parent, she had to be aged 18 years. Moreover, unless <strong>the</strong>re was a large dowry paid<br />

to Martha's family, and she were not born until 1697 as purported by her family, <strong>in</strong> no<br />

way would <strong>the</strong> Strode family allowed her to marry a man more than twice her age.<br />

Besides, if she were born 1697 per <strong>the</strong> tombstone record <strong>of</strong> some fame held by <strong>the</strong><br />

museum <strong>in</strong> Salisbury North Carol<strong>in</strong>a, she would have been under age 18 when she<br />

married Morgan <strong>Bryan</strong>, and she could not have married without permission <strong>of</strong> her<br />

guardian.<br />

Children from this marriage were:<br />

66 M i. Joseph <strong>Bryan</strong> Sr. was born <strong>in</strong> 1716 <strong>in</strong> Perth Amboy, Burl<strong>in</strong>gton County,<br />

New Jersey and died <strong>in</strong> 1805 <strong>in</strong> Jefferson County, Kentucky at age 89.<br />

Joseph married Hester Simpson (d. 1741) <strong>in</strong> 1736 <strong>in</strong> Orange County,<br />

Virg<strong>in</strong>ia.<br />

Joseph next married Alice L<strong>in</strong>ville (d. 1807) <strong>in</strong> 1741 <strong>in</strong> Frederick County,<br />

Virg<strong>in</strong>ia.<br />

67 M ii. Col. Samuel <strong>Bryan</strong> was born <strong>in</strong> 1721 <strong>in</strong> Chester County, Pennsylvania and<br />

died after 15 Aug 1798 <strong>in</strong> Rowan County, North Carol<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

Samuel married Elizabeth McMahon (d. Bef 1810).<br />

68 F iii. Eleanor <strong>Bryan</strong> was born <strong>in</strong> 1722 <strong>in</strong> Chester County, Pennsylvania and died<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1792 <strong>in</strong> Madison County, Kentucky at age 70.<br />
