, Devonshire, England, and died before 1650 <strong>in</strong> Fort St. George, , Tamil Nådu, India.<br />

• Information: 1582, Buckland Monachorum, , Devonshire, England. Francis was<br />

certified as Ship Capta<strong>in</strong> and Master <strong>in</strong> Rotterdam by Capt. Nicholas Wash<strong>in</strong>gton II<br />

June 14, 1609. He hired out to <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton family and served <strong>the</strong> East India Trade.<br />

He did not marry <strong>in</strong> Rotterdam or England <strong>the</strong>reto, he may have married <strong>in</strong> India. He<br />

was master <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ships that <strong>landed</strong> at Masulipatam India <strong>in</strong> 1611.<br />

We have accessed a considerable number <strong>of</strong> resources attempt<strong>in</strong>g to prove this man<br />

and his family. We assumed <strong>the</strong> extant data circulated about this <strong>Bryan</strong> family to be<br />

correct, and followed it accord<strong>in</strong>gly. Then we began f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g bits and pieces <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>formation that suggested <strong>the</strong> accepted historical pedigree was suspect. We <strong>the</strong>n<br />

turned our attention to locate sound pro<strong>of</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bryan</strong> family <strong>of</strong><br />

Chedd<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>in</strong> Buck<strong>in</strong>ghamshire. We followed Sir Francis <strong>Bryan</strong> throughout his<br />

lifetime and <strong>the</strong>re is tons <strong>of</strong> extant data <strong>in</strong> England and Ireland whereas <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />

doubt about him, or his second wife. Serious doubt exists however about Sir Francis<br />

<strong>Bryan</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g descendants by his second wife, Lady Joan Fitzgerald. We turned to<br />

<strong>the</strong> latest published book that proves Armorial Bear<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom's<br />

antique heraldry, and <strong>the</strong> trusted Burkes publication proved that Sir <strong>William</strong> Smith that<br />

went to Ireland <strong>in</strong> service to his country did <strong>in</strong> fact exist, and he married Bridget<br />

Fleetwood.<br />

Sir <strong>William</strong> Smith was born <strong>circa</strong> 1550, and he was <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> George Smith and his<br />

wife, Isabella. He married Bridget Fleetwood, daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas Fleetwood <strong>in</strong><br />

1590. Sir <strong>William</strong> died <strong>in</strong> 1626; however, he was a peer <strong>of</strong> Sir Francis <strong>Bryan</strong> Jr., born<br />

1550; <strong>the</strong>refore, rul<strong>in</strong>g out any possibility that he could have married his peer's<br />
