before 6 Oct 1744 <strong>in</strong> Sa<strong>in</strong>t Phillips, Barbados.<br />

• Information: 1717, Brugge, , Brabant, Belgium. Mary was <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Jonathan<br />

Bumpas and his wife, Marian Stewart, we could not prove her parents marriage. She<br />

was a sp<strong>in</strong>ster aged 21 when she married John <strong>Bryan</strong>. Both parents gave consent to <strong>the</strong><br />

marriage. Her fa<strong>the</strong>r was a merchant <strong>of</strong> London and Brugge. Several members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bumpas family settled <strong>in</strong> New England early.<br />

John next married Elizabeth Balzell on 6 Oct 1744 <strong>in</strong> Sa<strong>in</strong>t Phillips, Barbados. Elizabeth was<br />

born <strong>in</strong> 1720 <strong>in</strong> Barbados, West Indies and died before 1785 <strong>in</strong> Richmond County, Virg<strong>in</strong>ia.<br />

John <strong>Bryan</strong> on Barbados, we could not porve her maiden name, parents, or her former<br />

husband.<br />

77. Capt. Jonathan <strong>Bryan</strong> (John Sr. (Capt.) 5 , Lewis 4 , John 3 , <strong>William</strong> (Capt.) 2 ,<br />

John Sr. (Capt.) 1 ) was born <strong>in</strong> 1724 <strong>in</strong> Barbados, West Indies and died before 1790 <strong>in</strong> Wilkes<br />

County, North Carol<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

Noted events <strong>in</strong> his life were:<br />

• Information: 1724, Barbados, West Indies. Jonathan was certified as Master and Ship<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong> May 1745 when but age 21, but he could not serve as Master until age 26 <strong>in</strong><br />

1750. Because he could not hire out <strong>in</strong> any postition except mate or sailor he jo<strong>in</strong>ed his<br />

older bro<strong>the</strong>r John <strong>the</strong>n located <strong>in</strong> Richmond County Virg<strong>in</strong>ia. Through his bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Jonathan purchased a plantation <strong>in</strong> Culpeper County, and it was overseen by John when<br />

Jonathan was at sea. Besides his mar<strong>in</strong>er pr<strong>of</strong>ession, Jonathan was a merchant. When<br />

his son <strong>William</strong> married Letty Asher and was aged 21, Jonathan deeded <strong>the</strong> Culpeper<br />

plantation to him, before remov<strong>in</strong>g to North Carol<strong>in</strong>a with <strong>the</strong>ir youngest son, Francis.<br />

We could not prove but one son born to Jonathan, one with each wife. More than likely<br />

we are miss<strong>in</strong>g children <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ten year gap between his 1st marriage and <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>William</strong>.<br />

Jonathan married Maria Lu<strong>the</strong>r on 17 Jan 1750 <strong>in</strong> Wimborne M<strong>in</strong>ster, , Dorset, England.<br />

Maria was born <strong>in</strong> 1729 <strong>in</strong> Sankt Peter, Kobensharn, Bornholms Amt, Denmark, was<br />

christened on 14 May 1729 <strong>in</strong> Sankt Peter, Kobensharn, Bornholms Amt, Denmark, and died<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1765 <strong>in</strong> Culpeper County, Virg<strong>in</strong>ia at age 36.<br />

• Information: 1729, Sankt Peter, Kobensharn, Bornholms Amt, Denmark. Maria was <strong>the</strong><br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>er Jurgen Lu<strong>the</strong>r and his wife, Susanna Magdalena - Her parents<br />

married <strong>in</strong> Sweden, we could not prove <strong>the</strong>ir marriage, or her mo<strong>the</strong>r's maiden name.<br />

Maria's bro<strong>the</strong>rs Peter settled <strong>in</strong> Colleton County South Carol<strong>in</strong>a before she married<br />
