“the twelve-twenty” represents most likely the final
refinement of the best quality english sidelockgun.
the patents no.26.903 and 28.806 for this were
made by william Baker in 1906/1911. w.Baker was
one of the greatest British gun makers and inventers.
the spring opener eliminated the problem with “self
openers” : very easy to open, but often difficult to
close! the Baker action is equalled smooth both ways.
another refinement is, that the mainsprings is only
coked, when the barrels is mounted. the mainsprings
are situated in a swivelling housing behind
the tumbler. this alone allows a stronger action. it is
not necessary to machine out slots to accommodate
the conventional mainsprings and cocking bars. this
design allows the width of the base of the action
is reduced. the ejectors are considered the most
dependable ever made.
the action is extremely slim line, mostly like a .20
gauge. the weight is less than 6 pounds and yet it
has exceptional section strength. Like the Dickson
round-action, the design gives good handling
characteristics. to reduce the overall weight of the
gun, the thickness of barrel walls is also reduced.
this provides a nice central balance. the Baker
patens were also used by other well-known gun
makers like: e. J. churchill, william powel, Stephan
Grant and others. S.Grant named his version “Light
weight”. But it was the “12/20” which became commonly
known. this was mainly due to the fact that
char. Lancaster had the most efficient marketing.
this design is the finest, strongest and most elegant
of its kind in the evolution of the British sidelock.
Maybe the final design. no significant improvements
have been made since this w. Baker design. only a
few couple of hundreds of these guns were made.
