absorbed. I propose to eliminate the idea <strong>of</strong> mere emission <strong>of</strong> light <strong>and</strong><br />
substitute the idea <strong>of</strong> transmission, or a process <strong>of</strong> exchange <strong>of</strong> energy<br />
between two definite atoms...<br />
The same idea was picked up by Einstein pointing to the view <strong>of</strong> the German<br />
physicist H. Tetrode:<br />
• The sun would not radiate if it were alone in space <strong>and</strong> no other bodies<br />
could absorb the radiation.<br />
Hint: This idea is followed up in a new treatment <strong>of</strong> blackbody radiation:<br />
The absorber-emitter <strong>and</strong> emitter-absorber are as intimately coupled as the<br />
victim-murderer <strong>and</strong> murderer-victim, or <strong>Faustus</strong>-Devil for that matter (recalling<br />
the murder <strong>of</strong> Marlowe from interaction with an unknown but existing<br />
murderer).<br />
