been altotrether satisfactory, as the Laird and tlie I'riijadier were involved<br />

in litigation in the Coui't <strong>of</strong> Session in 1715, respecting the .same affairs.^<br />

Five years after his settlement <strong>of</strong> the estates, the Laird died at Edin-<br />

burgli in Novend_)er 1716. His remains were interred in the Abbey Church<br />

<strong>of</strong> Holyroodhouse, on the lUth November <strong>of</strong> that year, in the north-Avest<br />

corner <strong>of</strong> the church, four feet from the north wall. <strong>The</strong> Burial Register<br />

<strong>of</strong> Holyrood says that he was laid in the same place where his father had<br />

been buried on the 10th <strong>of</strong> October 1GG.3.''<br />

Lndovick <strong>Grant</strong> was twice married. His tirst wife was Janet Brodie,<br />

only child and heiress <strong>of</strong> Alexander P)rodie <strong>of</strong> Lethen. <strong>The</strong> marriage<br />

contract is dated •21st December 1G71.^ and six days later the marriage<br />

took place.* From the diary <strong>of</strong> the lady's kinsman, the Laird <strong>of</strong> Brodie,<br />

it would ajipear that the Laird <strong>of</strong> <strong>Grant</strong>'s friends opposed the marriage.'<br />

This fact is commented on by the chronicler already quoted, who says tliat<br />

the Clan opposed the match, deeming the lady, though a great fortune, to<br />

be the Laird's inferior. I^ut he adds, " she proved so wise, good, and<br />
