<strong>of</strong> Session. This step inv(jlved the young couple in the heavy displeasure<br />

<strong>of</strong> the parents <strong>of</strong> l.ioth, but Sir Ih'w \v;is the first to condone the oH'ence,<br />

and in their interest he l)esieged Sir James Avith applications for a. projier<br />

settlement <strong>of</strong> the barony <strong>of</strong> Luss. An able lawyer <strong>of</strong> the chm, i'atrick<br />

<strong>Grant</strong> <strong>of</strong> Elchies, afterwards a Lord <strong>of</strong> Session with the titli> <strong>of</strong> Lord<br />

Elchies, conducted the arrangement <strong>of</strong> alfairs on belialf <strong>of</strong> Sii- James, and<br />

on 17th i\Liy 1729, a long letter containing the President's iinal proposals<br />

was sent foi' Sir James's consideration. <strong>The</strong> jiro])osals made were, .shortly,<br />

as follows:— 1. That Sir James and his son Ludovick shoidd assist each<br />

other in giying bonds for the debts <strong>of</strong> the one and the other ; 2. That in<br />

this they should ask the aid <strong>of</strong> their friends ; o. That Sir James should<br />

make over to his son all claims that he liad against the estate <strong>of</strong> Luss, and<br />

also debts due to that family, his right to the Slate-crag, etc. ; 4. That Sir<br />

James should make over to Ludovick a certain debt exigible from Sir John<br />

Houston ; 5. That certain Cjuestions should be I'aiscd as to the apiplication<br />

<strong>of</strong> the price paid for the estate <strong>of</strong> Colcjuhoun, sold after the deed <strong>of</strong> entail,<br />

and as to a discharge <strong>of</strong> the price granted by Sir James, with the view <strong>of</strong><br />

securing any balance due to the fmiily <strong>of</strong> Luss ; G. That Ludovick should<br />

discharge Su- James <strong>of</strong> the hitter's whole intromissions Avith the estate <strong>of</strong><br />

Luss, and <strong>of</strong> all claims against Sir James in any way ; 7. That Ludovick<br />

should take on himself the burden <strong>of</strong> .£50,000 <strong>of</strong> debt, and the mtere.st<br />

there<strong>of</strong>, from Whitsunday 172'.), and <strong>of</strong> any claims made by the superiors<br />

<strong>of</strong> the lands, and that Sir James .should relieve him <strong>of</strong> all other debts.'*<br />
