<strong>The</strong> Brigadier also continued in the command <strong>of</strong> his regiment, which<br />

was quartered at Fort-William and elsewhere. He i-eceived from Whitehall<br />

an intimation, dated 'Jth .liuie 1710, referring to disorders commitlod by<br />

the troops in their quarters iVir want <strong>of</strong> a, sidheient nund)ei' <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>licers to<br />

preserve discipline, and di'sii'ing the Brigadier to dii-ect that one field<br />

<strong>of</strong>licer, with two-thirds <strong>of</strong> tlie <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> all grades, shall repair to quarters<br />

and continue with the regiment, any <strong>of</strong>ficer desiiing leave <strong>of</strong> absence<br />

receiving it only when relieved by another <strong>of</strong> the same raidv.'"'<br />

Towards the end <strong>of</strong> the year he received a letter i'rom Colonel (V'cil,<br />

the <strong>of</strong>ficer in actual command <strong>of</strong> the regiment, who refers to certain former<br />

causes <strong>of</strong> complaint at Fort-William wliicli liad been removed, and then<br />

adds, " I ha\'e thou"ht it for the advantaQ-e <strong>of</strong> your reu'iment and good <strong>of</strong><br />

the service, to discharge all such men as were much tnider size, or other-<br />

wise unlitt to serve, in (n-der to recruit bette)', by which the coare (corps)<br />

may be much mended whenever you think it convenient to send your<br />

commands and instructions al)Otit it." ^<br />

Shortly afterwards, lirigadier <strong>Grant</strong> receivwl <strong>of</strong>ficial intimation that<br />

his regi)nent was to be transferred to the Irish establishment on l2-tth June<br />

1717, u\> to which date he would receive the full pay <strong>of</strong> the regiment, pro-<br />

vided he embarked the complete number <strong>of</strong> men. He was also instructed<br />

to make a return <strong>of</strong> the effective strength <strong>of</strong> his regiment, that ai-range-<br />

ments might be made for their transport to Ireland.''<br />

<strong>The</strong> Brig;ulier, on I7th July, was curtly informed that the King<br />

had no further occasion for his services.' an event whicli was not uu-<br />
