Lovat complains greatly as to the delay in siL^ming his remij^sion, though<br />

he was willing to venture everything for the Government, and ffir<br />

<strong>Grant</strong>.<br />

Lovat went north in Ootolier 171."), arriving at DnniiVics on the llth<br />

message from his Grace.' Lovat thereafter proceeded to the iiorih, wliere<br />

eight hundred <strong>of</strong> the Glan <strong>Grant</strong>, and eleven hundred Munroes, he took<br />

part in the reduction <strong>of</strong> Inverness.<br />

<strong>The</strong> address already referred to luav have been simied about tliis time '<br />

as it implores the King for one <strong>of</strong> his subjects, " who, sometime banished and<br />

imprisoned, has lately, when the greatest dangers appeared to suiTound us,<br />

by the intluence which he has over a numerous clan, sustained with us that<br />

cause which, for the defence <strong>of</strong> your ]\Iajesty's undoubted right to the<br />

Crown, we have supjMjrted with all our {lower. That unfortunate man <strong>of</strong><br />

rank [cjualite], my Lord Lovat, for whom with all submission we present<br />

this address, will not dare <strong>of</strong> himself to ask favour <strong>of</strong> your Majestv, but he<br />

trusts to those who are openly and steadfastly devoted to your Majesty's<br />

service, . . . praying them to attest the truth on this point : we cannot<br />

refuse either in justice or compassion to testify to your Majesty that by the<br />

aid and strength <strong>of</strong> the name and clan <strong>of</strong> the Erasers, wdio are under his<br />

order, ve are conhrmed in the defence and maintenance <strong>of</strong> the present<br />

happy constitution in Church and State." <strong>The</strong> memorialists conclude bv<br />

pledging themselves to any amount that may be desired tor Lovat's sincere<br />

intention to sustain the authority <strong>of</strong> the Government.'<br />

As has been said, this document was signed by Brigadier <strong>Grant</strong>, Avho,<br />

if he had not met Lovat in London, liad certainly corresjionded with him,<br />

and was, as has been shown, one <strong>of</strong> the fir.st to meet him in <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

Besides Brigadier <strong>Grant</strong>, Lord Strathnaver, the Sherifts <strong>of</strong> Eoss, Morav,<br />
