a two or three-year graduate study programme.<br />

• Diplomã de doctor – Doctorate diploma (Ph.D.). This is the highest academic degree<br />

awarded in all domains after 4-6 years of study and original research. It follows<br />

the fi rst academic degree (or Masters degree) and requires the passing of examinations<br />

and submission of an original thesis. The holder of a doctoral diploma is granted<br />

the title of Ph.D. in their respective fi eld of science or the arts.<br />

• Doctor Honoris Causa – An honorary degree awarded by higher educational institutions<br />

(by vote of the Senate) to prominent Romanian and foreign fi gures in science,<br />

technology and culture. This honor is also occasionally conferred, in recognition<br />

of specifi c merits, to outstanding national and international public fi gures.<br />

<strong>IN</strong>TERNATIONAL RECOGNITION OF ROMANIAN DIPLOMAS<br />

Romania signed the Convention on the Recognition of Qualifi cations concerning Higher<br />

Education in the European Region (Lisbon, 1997), and is also part of the Bologna Process<br />

concerning the implementation of a Common European Higher Education Area.<br />

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS<br />

International students wishing to study in Romania can apply either to the Ministry of<br />

Education and Research or to the chosen Romanian university in order to receive a Letter<br />

of Acceptance.<br />

The following documents are requested:<br />

1. Application form.<br />

2. Certifi ed copy of Baccalaureate Diploma or equivalent – for undergraduate studies.<br />

3. Certifi ed copy of graduation certifi cate – for graduate or PhD applicants.<br />

4. Academic record translated into Romanian, English, French or German.<br />

5. Language certifi cate (see further instructions regarding this issue).<br />

6. Certifi ed copy of birth certifi cate.<br />

7. Certifi ed copy of passport.<br />

8. Medical certifi cate.<br />

Application forms are available at the International Relations Offi ces of the Ministry of<br />

Education and Research (Tel.: +7 4021 3142680; 3131013; Fax: +7 4021 3126614) or<br />

at Romanian universities, or at Romanian Embassies abroad. Application documents<br />

(copies only) should be mailed to the Ministry of Education and Research or to the chosen<br />

university in order to receive an approval statement. The Ministry of Education and<br />

Research will issue a Letter of Acceptance no later than 2 months after receiving the<br />

complete documents. Offi cial documents should be submitted in person, in the original,<br />

when applying in Romania. Before coming to Romania, international students should<br />

have their documents endorsed within the Romanian embassies in their own countries<br />

before obtaining a valid visa to study in Romania.<br />
