152 4 MuSeuM The dinosaur hall Für nAturKunDe The museum’s collection stores 30 million objects, from fossils and preserved animal specimens to minerals and up to 4.5 billion-year-old meteorites. A particular highlight is the world’s largest dinosaur displayed in a museum. In the East Wing a large research collection of formaldehyde-preserved specimens is accessible to the public. Permanent exhibition Evolution in Activity Life is an obvious and yet unique phenomenon in our universe, as far as we know. Closely linked to life is evolution; the exhibition conveys how evolution is everywhere and how the cosmos, Earth and life are all connected. temporary exhibition Kingdom of Elephants – A World of Fossils in Europe The treasure rescued by archaeologists from the Neumark-Nord brown coal excavation pit near Halle in 1985 is around 200 000 years old. Relics of a whole sea habitat had been retained in the fossil deposit. At the centre of the exhibition is the skull and further remains of 70 Eurasian straight-tusked elephants. The reconstruction of a European straight-tusked elephant in the exhibition »Elefantenreich« 2.00–6.00 pm Children’s activity Exploration, discovery and handicrafts in the exhibitions and in the microscopy centre 6.00 pm–2.00 am Guided tours (in German), Talks, Activities Old Berliners and immigrants in the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is celebrating and the museum too. The history of the museum is closely bound to the history of the German capital. The museum not only received exactly 775 objects from the Berlin nature researcher Alexun<strong>der</strong> von Humboldt but there are also legacies to discover from the kaisers, from the wars and »rooms without ears« (i.e. that were not monitored by the Stasi). Many original Berlin species are on show in the collection, but also famous »immigrants« like the Brachiosaurus brancai and Berlin’s Archaeopteryx. 6.00–11.00 pm Guided tours (in German), registration from 5.45 in the dinosaur hall Backstage: The Scientific Collections of the Museum für Naturkunde History and stories from the Museum für Naturkunde 10.00 pm–12.00 am Music Cocktails and musical finale in the dinosaur hall with DJ Grammophon The detailed programme is available from August 2012 at www.naturkandemuseum-berlin.de.
