With biographic examples and nearly 600 exhibits,
the »Palace of Tears« illustrates German everyday
life in the context of German division and borders. It
also shows the most important developments of
the process of reunification.

Parting tears and longing, anger and despair –
in no other place are the feelings about border
crossing so concentrated as they are at the
»Tränenpalast« the Berlin border intersection for
the departure from East to West at Friedrichstraße
Station. This was where people directly experienced
the effects of the German division on their
personal lives.

The Association of Berlin Artists was founded in
1841 as an independent, self-governing union of
artists from Berlin; at their residence near Potsdamer
Platz the association holds diverse exhibitions
and discussion events.

Eleven Berlin artists experimented in a laboratory
situation for eleven days as a communal,
public project with a specific focus on Istanbul’s
dramatic art – a game with an unknown outcome.
The project will be continued in December 2012
in Istanbul.
