Phase D is a cross-country ride over 33 obstacles,
covering a riding distance of 7,650 m. in all. Pace 450
m. per minute. Additional points are gained by faster
riding up to 570 m. per minute.
Phase E, a flat race of 2,000 m. Pace 333 m. per minute.
A speedier riding will not give additional points.
In the evening of the 12th of June a heavy rain begins
to fall that increases in intensity during the night. After
ten hours' time 40 mm. rain have fallen. All the night
through, the courses are looked after continuously. Large
quantities of gravel are brought to the course and a unit
of the Army Engineers reinforces the ground at the
critical spots, specially at the water obstacles No. 19
and No. 22.
The arrangements made for the Endurance test are very
comprehensive. Telephone and radio communications are
available all over the course and motor orderlies are at
hand for speedy reporting to the Competition Committee.
Thus a preliminary result can be announced on the
electric results board a few minutes after the rider has
arrived at the finish of the Endurance test course.
Phase A starts at the Hussar Bridge (Husarbron) situated
in the Lilljansskogen wood about one kilometer's distance
from the Olympic stables. All participating riders make
this phase of the competition without minus marks.
Phase B, the steeplechase, is run on the Ulriksdal dirt
track north of Stockholm. The course is deep and demands
that both the rider and his horse are in good
