Phase D is a cross-country ride over 33 obstacles,<br />

covering a riding distance <strong>of</strong> 7,650 m. in all. Pace 450<br />

m. per minute. Additional points are gained by faster<br />

riding up to 570 m. per minute.<br />

Phase E, a flat race <strong>of</strong> 2,000 m. Pace 333 m. per minute.<br />

A speedier riding will not give additional points.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> evening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 12th <strong>of</strong> June a heavy rain begins<br />

to fall that increases in intensity during <strong>the</strong> night. After<br />

ten hours' time 40 mm. rain have fallen. All <strong>the</strong> night<br />

through, <strong>the</strong> courses are looked after continuously. Large<br />

quantities <strong>of</strong> gravel are brought to <strong>the</strong> course and a unit<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Army Engineers reinforces <strong>the</strong> ground at <strong>the</strong><br />

critical spots, specially at <strong>the</strong> water obstacles No. 19<br />

and No. 22.<br />

The arrangements made for <strong>the</strong> Endurance test are very<br />

comprehensive. Telephone and radio communications are<br />

available all over <strong>the</strong> course and motor orderlies are at<br />

hand for speedy reporting to <strong>the</strong> Competition Committee.<br />

Thus a preliminary result can be announced on <strong>the</strong><br />

electric results board a few minutes after <strong>the</strong> rider has<br />

arrived at <strong>the</strong> finish <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Endurance test course.<br />

Phase A starts at <strong>the</strong> Hussar Bridge (Husarbron) situated<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Lilljansskogen wood about one kilometer's distance<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Olympic stables. All participating riders make<br />

this phase <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> competition without minus marks.<br />

Phase B, <strong>the</strong> steeplechase, is run on <strong>the</strong> Ulriksdal dirt<br />

track north <strong>of</strong> Stockholm. The course is deep and demands<br />

that both <strong>the</strong> rider and his horse are in good<br />
