NFPA 72. The services shall include runner service to the facility. Equipment<br />

installation, inspection, testing and maintenance are the responsibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Installation requirements:<br />

All wiring for new fire alarm/detection systems shall be installed in conduit. Junction<br />

box covers shall be painted red with letters “F/A” using a permanent marker on the<br />

cover.<br />

Fire alarm signaling line and notification appliance circuits shall not be electrically<br />

loaded beyond 80% <strong>of</strong> full capacity to allow for future expansion <strong>of</strong> the system.<br />

All fire alarm initiating devices, control modules, speaker, horn, and strobe circuits shall<br />

be labeled to identify the device address, circuit origin and function, as applicable on the<br />

device.<br />

Spare parts shall be provided for each type <strong>of</strong> initiating, field control module, and<br />

notification devices installed on the fire alarm system. A minimum <strong>of</strong> three <strong>of</strong> each type<br />

<strong>of</strong> device, or 5% <strong>of</strong> the total number <strong>of</strong> each type <strong>of</strong> device installed in the building,<br />

whichever is greater, shall be provided to the Project Manager.<br />

Smoke detectors must be non-ionizing radiation brands or if ionizing radiation, then<br />

they must be domestic (USA).<br />

Termination connections, other than terminals provided on devices affixed to the box,<br />

shall not be made in a junction or termination box smaller than 6”x6”x3”, or the<br />

equivalent volume. Termination box covers shall be labeled. Connections shall be made<br />

using terminal strips or wire nuts.<br />

Project closeout and inspections:<br />

The final version or revision <strong>of</strong> all intelligent fire alarm control panel s<strong>of</strong>tware shall be<br />

turned over to the Project Manager for the <strong>University</strong>’s Fire Protection Supervisor in<br />

addition to the record <strong>of</strong> completion form in an electronic media format such as a CD or<br />

USB Flash Drive.<br />

Fire alarm systems are to be acceptance tested in accord to Code requirements. UVa<br />

Fire Protection Group shall observe the installed system and witness the fire alarm<br />

system performance tests prior to <strong>University</strong> Building Official <strong>of</strong>fice and responsible<br />

State Fire Marshal Office. The A/E and contractor shall certify that the fire alarm system<br />

is complete.<br />

BSRV 6.3.7 OTHER SPECIAL SYSTEMS<br />

Other special systems such as nurse call, intercom, audio/visual or paging shall be<br />

provided on a project-by-project basis.<br />
