Building systems (mechanical, electrical, telephone/data communications) space shall<br />

include considerations for routine and emergency maintenance access and adequate<br />

space for storage and/or use <strong>of</strong> related drawings, specifications, and operations and<br />

maintenance manuals.<br />

GR 5.6 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES (ITS)<br />

Programming and Schematic <strong>Design</strong> shall meet requirements established through the<br />

Project Manager by Information Technology and Communications. ITS equipment rooms<br />

shall be dedicated for Information Technology Services use (telephone, data and<br />

entertainment video services). These rooms shall not be used to support any other<br />

building utility.<br />

Consultation with ITS shall be considered in the determination <strong>of</strong> room size<br />

requirements related to the projected number <strong>of</strong> outlets served including not less than<br />

thirty-three percent growth (growth percentage may be higher if programmatic needs<br />

are not clear). The following information is summarized from ITS website<br />

http://its.virginia.edu/, which may prove useful to the Project Manager and A/E.<br />

Waivers <strong>of</strong> the following requirements require ITS approval except those specifically<br />

established by these <strong>Facility</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>Guidelines</strong> that exceed or clarify ITS requirements.<br />

Telecommunications room/closets shall have:<br />

1) A minimum size <strong>of</strong> 6’-0” x 8’-0 (serves up to 100 outlets)<br />

2) 9’-0” minimum height<br />

3) No suspended or false ceiling unless required by building code construction<br />

requirements<br />

4) A lockable 3’-0” minimum width, 6’-8” minimum height door opening out unless<br />

prohibited by building code requirements for fire exit access passage width.<br />

(Room size may need to be increased if the door must swing into the room.)<br />

5) 50 foot-candles illumination level at 3’-0” above floor, ceiling mounted 8’-6”<br />

minimum clear above floor (no wall mounted light fixtures)<br />

6) HVAC capacity to maintain ambient room temperature below 75 degrees<br />

(typical heat load less than 6,000 watts), 30-75% relative humidity, and a slight<br />

positive pressure. HVAC capacity to be available 24/7 year-round.<br />

7) Fire-treated ¾” plywood from floor to 8’-0” above finish floor on three walls.<br />
