Acknowledgments

present work could not have been written. SCHEER thanks the Hessische Kultusminister Wiesbaden and
the Hessische Landesmuseum Darmstadt for the possibility to organize an expedition to the Red Sea in
1962 with the purpose of collecting corals. Furthermore, he expresses his thank s to Prof. Dr. Hans HASS,
head of the 2nd Xarifa Expedition 1957/58 for the opportunity to participate in this expedition, which
gave him the chance to collect corals in various pam of the Red Sea. PI LLAI gratefully acknowledges the
award of a fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Bonn- Bad Godesberg, which enabled
him to work on the Red Sea corals together with SCHEER at the Hessische Landesmuseum Darmstadt in
