The Youth Employment Partnership to dismantle the Port of Oakland’s Building 733. The<br />

large warehouse yielded 136,800 board meters of mainly old-growth Douglas fir.<br />

The total expense to deconstruct- $330,000<br />

Income from salvaged lumber-$280,000<br />

Net cost was $50,000.<br />

Demolition bid: $150,000. (Urban Ecologist, Number 2, 1997).<br />

e. San Francisco’s Presidio<br />

Beyond <strong>Waste</strong> and San Francisco Community Recyclers deconstructed Building 901 at San<br />

Francisco’s Presidio. The structure came down in one month, yielding 20,117 board meter of<br />

old growth Douglas fir and Port Orford cedar for salvage.<br />

Total deconstructing expense (including labor, equipment, and administrative costs), was<br />

$53,000.<br />

Income from the salvaged wood - $43,660<br />

Net cost of deconstruction-$9,340<br />

Demolition bid - $16,800<br />
