are 3%. The percentage of African Americans in Downtown Suffolk is much higher
proportionally, at 70.8% of the entire Downtown population, while the white population
is much lower at 27.1%. When comparing the total population of the races between the
Downtown and the rest of the city, 11.6% of the city’s total white population and 37.5%
of the city’s total African American population lives downtown. Other races, including
American Indian and Asian populations, comprise 3% of the total city population. The
highest discrepancy between city and Downtown populations occurs in this category,
with only 2.1% of residents in this category living downtown.

Census tract 751 contains the highest number of African Americans at 3481 residents
followed by tract 756 at 3058. The tracts with the highest concentration of African
American residents are 655 at 97.8% and 651 at 90.8%. Tract 751 contains the highest
concentration of residents of other races at 5.5%. The MSA is 30.8 % African American
while the state is 19.6 %. Compared to the regional and state demographics, the city of
Suffolk contains a higher percentage of African American residents.
Age
There is very little difference in age between the Downtown and the city. For all
of the categories are within 3 percentage points, signifying that age distribution is very
similar between the city and Downtown, ass illustrated in Table 3 below. The largest
difference in percentage would be the residents aged 35 to 44, where there is a slightly
lower percentage in Downtown at 15.7% of the downtown population as compared to the
city average of 18.2%.
