Education
The US census begins taking education statistics by highest level achieved at age
25. If the population under 25 is removed from the total population numbers, then the
Downtown contains 9,229 residents over 25 while the city contains 41, 662 residents. In
all most every category, the Downtown residents have lower education levels than the
city as a whole. For post High school education, the city average is 47.2 % while
Downtown is 34.7%. At 15.3%, a larger percentage of downtown residents have less than
a 9th grade education as compared to the city average of 9.1%. The Downtown also has
a higher percentage of residents in the 9th through 12th grade with no diploma category.
Census Tract 655, in the southeast section of downtown, contains the largest
concentration of residents who have lower than a 9th grade education at 18.7% of
residents in that census tract, followed closely by Census Tract 654 with 18.1%. Census
Tract 654 also has the highest percentage of all city residents in the 9th through 12th
grade with no diploma category at 29.2%, followed next by Census Tract 651 26.8%. It
should be noted that 37.1 % of all city residents without a High school diploma live
Downtown while only 15.6 % of all city residents with an associate, bachelor or graduate
degree live in Downtown. The Census Tracts with the highest percentage of tract
population with an associate, bachelor or graduate degree is Tract 751, located in the
north east corner of the city, with 38.0% of all tract residents followed next by Tract 753
in the north west corner of the city at 36.0%. Census tract 652 at 33.3% has the highest
percentage of residents with an associate, bachelor or graduate degree in Downtown.
The City of Suffolk contains 24.2% of the above 25 population with an associate,
bachelor or graduate degree, the MSA contains 30.6 % while the state average is 35.1%.
