Land and Building Use

The study area is 3463728 sq ft (79.5 acres)
and contains 350 parcels. Land uses contained in the
study area fall under one of three types: public,
commercial, or residential. The majority of the land
uses follow the applicable zoning patterns discussed
earlier. At 174 parcels, almost half contain
buildings with commercial uses. The next largest
category is residential uses at 114 parcels, followed
by public uses at 70 parcels.
Map 3 illustrates building use in Downtown Suffolk.
Table 7 below illustrates the area’s land use by percent.

As Downtown Suffolk is the heart of the city, many public buildings can be found
there. Three major subtypes of public buildings are: city owned municipal buildings,
religious buildings, and other public meeting places.
