ACCESS COURSE FOR MATURE STUDENTS<br />

About the Course<br />

The Access Course for mature students is intended for adults<br />

whose background education was limited by socio-economic<br />

circumstances and/or educational disadvantage, but who have<br />

a deep desire and determination to complete their education at<br />

third level.<br />

Subjects, Assessment and Award<br />

Core Subjects: include Study Skills, Applied (Essay and Report} Writing, Information<br />

Technology, and Educational Guidance.<br />

Academic subjects: Students generally study four options (two per semester) from<br />

the following subjects during the course:<br />

Arts: Philosophy, Sociology, History, Irish, English, Mathematics, Legal Science,<br />

Classical Civilization and Spanish.<br />

Science/Engineering/IT: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology<br />

Commerce: Economics, Mathematics<br />

Students are assessed on satisfactory attendance and performance in all elements<br />

of the programme, which include written / oral assignments and essays. Academic<br />

progress is measured through a process of continuous assessment and end of term<br />

examinations.<br />

Participants who successfully complete the Access Course will receive a Certificate<br />

of Completion from NUI,Galway, and will be eligible to apply for direct entry (via<br />

the CAO) to full-time <strong>University</strong> degree courses in the faculties of Arts (Galway and<br />

Sligo), Commerce, Celtic Studies, Science, Engineering, and Law and the B.Ed (Home<br />

Economics) at St Angela’s College, Sligo
