CERTIFICATE IN GENERAL STUDIES*<br />

About the Course<br />

The Certificate in General Studies is designed for adult students<br />

who may not have benefited from, or had access to, educational<br />

opportunities in the past.<br />

The course is designed for participants who have been out of the<br />

formal education system for some time and who now wish to<br />

enter 3rd level studies.<br />

The course will:<br />

Provide the participants with an opportunity to experience the satisfaction that<br />

can be gained from learning in an academic environment<br />

Enhance participants’ knowledge to the level expected of an undergraduate<br />

student<br />

Build up the participants’ confidence in their academic ability;<br />

Equip the participants with skills to benefit from, and participate in a 3rd level<br />

education course.<br />

ACCESS/FOUNDATION COURSES<br />

Subjects, Assessment and Award<br />

The course covers the following subject areas:<br />

Mathematics<br />

Communications and Study Skills<br />

Personal Development and Career Planning<br />

Information Technology<br />

Engineering<br />

Introduction to Social Care<br />

Business Studies<br />

French or German or Spanish or English for Academic Purposes<br />

This course leads to the award of a FETAC Level 5 Certificate in General Studies.<br />

The certificate is designed as a means of satisfying the minimum entry requirements<br />

for admission to HETAC approved Higher Certificate and Ordinary Bachelor Degree<br />

courses and may be accepted by some Universities.<br />

Participants who then wish to be admitted to full time third level courses at<br />

the Institute or other third level institutions must apply through the CAO before<br />

February 1st of year of entry to third level.<br />
