FETAC FOUNDATION COURSE<br />

About the Courses<br />

Galway Mayo Institute of Technology offers a one-year<br />

accredited FETAC Foundation Certificate for adults in both<br />

Galway and Castlebar. The aim of the course is to provide<br />

participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to<br />

undertake a full-time third-level course of study.<br />

It is a recognised entry requirement for progression onto the mainstream<br />

courses offered at GMIT.<br />

The FETAC Foundation Certificate is suitable for individuals who have been away<br />

from formal education for some time, or who left school with little or no formal<br />

qualifications and would like the opportunity to pursue a full-time third-level<br />

qualification.<br />

ACCESS/FOUNDATION COURSES<br />

Subjects, Assessment and Award<br />

The FETAC Foundation Certificate involves approximately 2 days of lectures a week<br />

over the academic year, but can be taken on a more part-time basis.<br />

Students who enrol on the FETAC Foundation Certificate take four core subjects and<br />

two electives. The four core subjects are:<br />

Communications and study skills<br />

Information Technology<br />

Mathematics<br />

Project<br />

Students also choose two subjects from a range of electives. The electives on offer<br />

are Electronics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Science.<br />

Students who successfully complete the FETAC Foundation Certificate will be<br />

supported in their application for submission onto the mainstream Higher<br />

Certificate, Ordinary Degree and Higher Degree programmes offered at GMIT, subject<br />

to the availability of places.<br />
