North America The 1% User’s Guide Public Architecture of San Francisco 110 Established in 2002 and based in San Francisco, Public Architecture identifies and solves practical problems of human interaction in the built environment. It acts as a catalyst for public discourse through education, advocacy, and the design of public spaces and amenities. Believing that design is a process of making things that build constructive values directly into the work, the team from MendeDesign of San Francisco saw a coming together of their own values and vision with those of Public Architecture. They identified in particular with the 1% Solution, an attempt to bring design sensitivity to the non-profit sector, a sector typically woefully short of access to thoughtful space planning and design. By pairing nonprofit organisations with interested architects, the 1% Solution enables those organisations to develop more healthy, dignified, efficient, user-friendly and meaningful working environments that function to better serve their clients and overall mission. So Jeremy Mende (creative director, designer, writer), Vinnie Chieco (writer), Steven Knodel (designer), Amadeo DeSousa (designer) and Diana Martinez (junior designer) came up with the 1% User’s Guide, a package of related print materials that seek to forge real, projectoriented, working relationships between architects and 501(c)(3), non-profit organisations. The 1% User’s Guide consists of two booklets: one written to engage principals of architecture firms, the other to engage the executive directors of non-profit organisations in need of design services. Users must complete a series of fill-in-the-blank style questions that remind them of the power of design to elevate quality of life. The two books adjoin one another, sharing a single spine. In this way the architect’s booklet leads into the back of the non-profit booklet, and the non-profit booklet leads into the architect’s booklet, creating a physical model of the architect-nonprofit relationship the project advocates.
