Zip Zap Circus School
Based in Cape Town, South Africa, the Zip Zap Circus
School is a unique organisation that uses the magical
yet challenging medium of circus arts training and
performance for the purpose of educational outreach
and youth development. To enable them to offer this
training free of charge, they also offer skilled riggers
and stunt performers for corporate clients and the
film industry.
Cheri Kroeger and Justin Soodyall (designers), Giselle
Kroeger (paper mechanic and copywriter) and Bradley
Urion (paper mechanic) of the Cape Peninsula University
of Technology in South Africa all felt very strongly about
their cause and, after spending some time in the circus
school environment, felt a strong connection with the
organisation.
‘The organisation has such a positive outlook on life,
and really put all their efforts into making Zip Zap
successful in the sense of enriching children’s lives,’
they enthused.
They decided to start with the most pressing need of the
organisation: the need for their own permanent home.
An interactive pop-up book was designed to appeal
to large corporations as well as people in the building
industry, giving them an overview of what Zip Zap is
about, and an idea of the proposed building. In the back
of the book a pledge form invites the reader to choose
between donating funds, or donating building materials
for the new home. Once they send the form back to
Zip Zap, a poster is mailed back, inviting them to a free
teambuilding session for their company at the Zip Zap
Circus School.
In this way, the team from the Cape Peninsula University
of Technology arrived at a magical win-win concept; the
donors help Zip Zap build their dream, and in turn, Zip
Zap helps them build their team.
