GAYBY
HE’S HAVING MY BABY
San Jose-based indie distributor Wolfe Releasing
focuses on small-niche LGBT content, and the
majority of its releases are destined for homeviewing
platforms. But Gayby was such a huge
hit on the festival circuit, the company just had
to make a splash with it. Two college friends,
Matt and Jenn, fulfill an old promise to have a
kid together if the rest of their options haven’t
panned out. But Matt’s gay, so doing it the oldfashioned
way is out of the question. Ultimately,
this story is about choosing—and making—your
family, a theme that’s important to everyone.
HERE COMES THE
BOOM
LIKE WARRIOR, BUT FUNNY
First, can we all stop and applaud how good
Kevin James looks? His exercise efforts should
not go unrecognized. And in this comedy by
regular partner-in-crime Frank Coraci, they
take center stage when he plays a biology
teacher trying to become a successful mixed
martial artist in order to win enough money
that his school can keep its extra curricular programs.
This comedy may seem made for kids,
but moms will attend in spades.
NOBODY WALKS
BUT EVERYONE STUMBLES
Lena Dunham made a such splash with her
debut film Tiny Furniture—a story about
being an artist adrift after college—that
producer Judd Apatow backed a TV show for
her HBO’s Girls. But she’s still writing films
like this one, an elegantly cast drama about a
couple who take in a young filmmaker (Olivia
Thirlby) and get derailed by her energy.
What’s nuanced about this simple story is that
it recognizes that an already tenuous marriage
can be shaken by chemistry between even
platonic strangers—and that it’s the moments
when we’re most in awe that we’re vulnerable
and irresponsible.
ATLAS SHRUGGED
PART II
WILL THE AUDIENCE SHRUG ...
AGAIN?
Self-distributed by its makers, this drama is
the second part of 2010’s adaptation of the
titular novel by Ayn Rand (a favorite of vice
presidential hopeful Paul Ryan), though if
it’s anything like the first installment, this
objectivist tale of capitalism über alles risks
being so poorly produced that it will convince
people to not even bother reading the book,
much less finishing the film series. Hey, Paul
Ryan—can you help?
