INDUSTRY BRIEFS THE 59TH PULA FILM FESTIVAL IN CROATIA, held in the ancient Vespasian’s Amphitheatre that dates back to the first century A.D., recently set three industry firsts in outdoor 3D film presentation. First, the 3D projection setup achieved the longest throw distance (using a Barco DP2K-32B projector) ever recorded: 242 feet, exceeding the recommended throw distance. Second, the setup achieved a wide-viewing angle of 60 degrees, allowing the 3D presentation to be viewed at suitable brightness levels throughout the entire seating area. As a result of this, the film festival was able to set what is believed to be a new Guinness World Record for an outdoor 3D presentation with an official attendance of 5,920 visitors. “We were delighted to supply the Stagelite Stereo surface for the festival and provide installation support,” says Tony Dilley, European sales manager at Harkness Screens. “The setup achieved by LMT (Laboratory of Multimedia Technologies in Zagreb), the festival’s technical resource was nothing short of remarkable and they deserve much praise.” THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THEATRE OWNERS OF ILLINOIS, composed of 19 member theaters that represent more than 75 percent of the motion picture screens throughout the state of Illinois, has awarded three college scholarships to theater employees who have demonstrated exemplary scholastic achievement, work ethic and leadership qualities. GDC TECHNOLOGY PARTNERED WITH BARCO to showcase groundbreaking S2K projection utilizing GDC Tech’s SX-3000 Standalone Integrated Media Block (IMB) and Barco’s DP2K- 10S at BIRTV 2012 in Beijing. GDC Tech’s integrated digital cinema solution utilizing Barco’s projector will usher in an exciting new phase for cinemas with small screens that have not yet transitioned to digital technology. Barco’s DP2K- 10S compact projector, based on the new S2K chipset from Texas Instruments, is designed to address the needs of smaller theaters with screens up to 33 feet wide. Barco’s DP2K-10S projector meets DCI specifications for image quality, color and security, and allows for greater versatility, including 3D and HFR capabilities. Meanwhile, GDC Tech’s SX-3000 Standalone IMB eliminates the need for an external file server, which greatly reduces theater management cost and makes boothless cinema practical. It also supports HFR content in both 2D and 3D. In addition, it allows HDMI input, 3G-SDI input, and 2D and 3D live streaming for alternative content. “We are thrilled to be teaming up with GDC Tech to present this groundbreaking demonstration,” says Phil Chen, general manager of CFG Barco (Beijing) Electronics Co.
