4 PROSEMINARE
English in the 19th and 20th Century

Joan Beal once called the 19 th century one of the two “Cinderellas of English historical linguistic
study”. Until recently historical linguistics focussed on the fundamental changes of the English
language previous to 1700. It is only since the turn of the millennium that research has turned to the
18 th and 19 th century, in which English starts resembling the language we use today. The 19 th
century saw socio-historical events such as the Industrial Revolution and Victorian imperialism
which both left a mark on the English language. It is also the period in which colonialism transports
English into the colonies, from which the many new varieties of English emerge. It will be
interesting to discuss whether in the development of English in the 20 th century we can trace the
heritage of the 19 th century, the impact of the First and Second World War and whether we can
prophesy future developments of the English language. The seminar will cover the two periods
between 1800 and 2000, give an insight into the socio-cultural background of the two periods and
will cover in turn aspects of phonology, grammar, the lexicon, onomastics, literary language, and
