8.3 Vorbereitungskurs für Examenskandidaten
Translation into English for Exam Candidates

This is a class open to all those intending to take their Staatsexamen at the end of the semester. You
will have the opportunity to hand in a translation from a past exam each week and to have it graded
at least every two weeks by your examiner, so that by the end of the semester you will have a good
idea of what is expected of you in the exam. Apart from discussing the exam texts, we will also be
revising typical problem areas. No issue too elementary or too advanced to be discussed, no such
thing as a stupid question!
Registration: There is no need to register beforehand; just turn up to the first session / send me an
email if you’re starting the course late. Please note that it is only possible to attend one of the three
translation prep courses.
Translation into English

This course will prepare you for Klausur I of the Staatsexamen. Each week we will translate and
correct past examinations and concentrate on some of those areas that cause you most difficulty
when it comes to translation. The course will conclude with a mock exam.
N.B.: This course is only open to students taking their exams at the end of this term.

Examination course: Middle English
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Insley Donnerstag 14:15 – 15:45 116 2st.
This course is intended for examination candidates preparing for a written or oral examination in
the history of English with emphasis on Middle English. We will deal with questions of Middle
English phonology, morphology and dialectology, as well as with the development of English
vocabulary (in particular, loans from Scandinavian and French). We will also translate Chaucerextracts
into German. Although the primary focus is on Middle English, due attention will be given
to general questions of language history.
N.B.: Students are expected to prepare each session thoroughly.
