Uses of The Competencies<br />
The Competencies is being used in a series of scale validation studies by Alicia Wendler of the<br />
Mid-America ATTC <strong>and</strong> Tamera Murdock <strong>and</strong> Johanna Nilsson of the University of Missouri–Kansas<br />
City to develop the Addiction Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale (ACSES). The 32-item ACSES assesses<br />
addiction counselors’ perceptions of their self-efficacy for addiction counseling skills <strong>and</strong> includes<br />
five subscales:<br />
uXXXExecuting specific addiction counseling skills<br />
u Assessment, treatment planning, <strong>and</strong> referral skills<br />
u Working with various co-occurring mental disorders<br />
u Group counseling skills<br />
u Basic counseling microskills.<br />
The researchers reported adequate internal consistency of the scale with a sample of 451 addiction<br />
counselors. Preliminary validity evidence for the scale was determined through two exploratory<br />
factor analyses, <strong>and</strong> the scale was found to be sensitive to counselor experience <strong>and</strong> degree levels.<br />
