war. 241 They must be provided with an identity card show<strong>in</strong>g that they are a pr<strong>is</strong>oner<br />

of war and they must be removed from the war zone to an area that <strong>is</strong> not considered<br />

dangerous to health or safety. They must be sheltered from bomb<strong>in</strong>g to the same<br />

extent that <strong>is</strong> provided to civilians <strong>in</strong> the same area. Other prov<strong>is</strong>ions that must be<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed are the right to clean water, food and clean surfaces as well as warmth for<br />

sleep<strong>in</strong>g. Sufficient light<strong>in</strong>g must be made available dur<strong>in</strong>g the day and special<br />

consideration must be given to them regard<strong>in</strong>g food and other special needs. Medical<br />

care must be provided for dent<strong>is</strong>try, artificial appliances such as spectacles as well as<br />

surgery. 242 Religious ceremonies shall be provided for each d<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ctive religion. 243<br />

Labour must not exceed the same conditions as local labour <strong>law</strong>s. These occupations<br />

must not be unhealthy or dangerous such as the removal of m<strong>in</strong>es or other similar<br />

labour. Pr<strong>is</strong>oners must be paid a m<strong>in</strong>imum wage for their labour, receive an hour<br />

lunch break and the fitness of each pr<strong>is</strong>oner must be exam<strong>in</strong>ed on a monthly bas<strong>is</strong>. 244<br />

The families of pr<strong>is</strong>oners must be contacted immediately when the <strong>in</strong>dividual becomes<br />

a pr<strong>is</strong>oner of war and <strong>in</strong>formation of (sic) whereabouts and h<strong>is</strong> state of health must be<br />

given freely. The pr<strong>is</strong>oner must be allowed to send and receive letters to loved ones<br />

and if he becomes seriously sick he must be sent back to h<strong>is</strong> own country<br />

immediately. 245 Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes those with serious wounds, mental or physical sickness,<br />

and those who are unlikely to recover. 246 Access must be given to representatives of<br />

the pr<strong>is</strong>oners or delegates of war, and th<strong>is</strong> must not be limited to time, place, duration<br />

or frequency.<br />

The responsibilities of the state are to ensure that th<strong>is</strong> convention <strong>is</strong> widely<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpreted, and <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the study of military programmes and civil <strong>in</strong>struction so<br />

that the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples become widely known to their armed forces and the entire<br />

population. 247 Grave breaches are breaches committed aga<strong>in</strong>st any person or<br />

property protected by th<strong>is</strong> convention, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g willful kill<strong>in</strong>g, torture, <strong>in</strong>human<br />

treatment, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g biological experiments, caus<strong>in</strong>g great suffer<strong>in</strong>g or serious <strong>in</strong>jury<br />
