3 IMPORTANCE of COLOR at the CONSERVATION<br />

At the conservation, restitution and reconstruction works of a historical building, the most important<br />

subject is to collect the appropriate and accurate documents. Therefore, within the documentation<br />

works, necessary data on the color properties of the existent building materials should be collect by<br />

color measurement. Color measurements of the materials carried out before the conservation works<br />

of the historical buildings will provide;<br />

- recording the surface materials’ inherent colors<br />

- choosing new materials having inherent colors to be used or designed at future restoration<br />

applications to get a reliable future intervention.<br />

- possibility for creating a realistic environment (the most real image) when a virtual reconstruction<br />

is considered.<br />

At the <strong>ERATO</strong> Project, inherent colors of surface materials of the buildings (Aspendos and Jerash<br />

Theaters and Aphrodisias <strong>Odeon</strong>) were recorded with in situ measurements. As mentioned at the<br />

previous parts, since the top level for the color precision is got with optical instrumentation and<br />

since the spectrophotometers are more reliable, it was decided to use “Spectrophotometer (Minolta -<br />

CM-2600D)” for measurements in order to obtain accurate color specifications. Some photos<br />

showing measurement process are presented in Figures 8-9-10 as examples [11].<br />
