3 IMPORTANCE of COLOR at the CONSERVATION
At the conservation, restitution and reconstruction works of a historical building, the most important
subject is to collect the appropriate and accurate documents. Therefore, within the documentation
works, necessary data on the color properties of the existent building materials should be collect by
color measurement. Color measurements of the materials carried out before the conservation works
of the historical buildings will provide;
- recording the surface materials’ inherent colors
- choosing new materials having inherent colors to be used or designed at future restoration
applications to get a reliable future intervention.
- possibility for creating a realistic environment (the most real image) when a virtual reconstruction
is considered.
At the ERATO Project, inherent colors of surface materials of the buildings (Aspendos and Jerash
Theaters and Aphrodisias Odeon) were recorded with in situ measurements. As mentioned at the
previous parts, since the top level for the color precision is got with optical instrumentation and
since the spectrophotometers are more reliable, it was decided to use “Spectrophotometer (Minolta -
CM-2600D)” for measurements in order to obtain accurate color specifications. Some photos
showing measurement process are presented in Figures 8-9-10 as examples [11].
